Beautiful Things Grow In The Desert

Now I must contradict myself; for previously I stated that the desert was barren, desolate and dry. I implied that there was no life in the desert.

I was wrong about this.

Perhaps the desert is the most beautiful place on earth.

Something beautiful does grow in the desert AND yet something also dies in the desert.

We die and we grow; and in this lies the “truth paradox” of the desert experience.

That we must die to grow, that the hard, protected, self-indulgent outer kernel of our dreams must be cracked and parched by the hot sun; before the genesis of who we truly are as artists can really begin to grow.

The Hidden Secret To Escaping The Desert

My secret to escaping the desert; to conquering creative dry spells, to reaching your goals and bathing in the oasis of your dreams may surprise you.

A word of caution, I am still walking in the desert, I have not reached my goals, so perhaps you should not listen to me…

My secret to escaping the desert, is to simply keep on walking.

Sitting down in the hot sun will kill you, and going back the way you have already come is not an option.

Don’t over think it; it’s just one foot at a time, one or two tasks or lines of writing every day.

Is it possible that you will never escape the desert? Not if you keep walking one foot at a time.

7 Ways To Find Friends When You Are Lonely

  1. Don’t hide and don’t keep your head down; fix your eyes on the horizon, and keep a constant look out for other travelers.
  2. Walk on the main path, don’t despondently wander off track convinced you will never find your oasis.
  3. Be open to conversations and unashamedly share your journey with others who you meet a long the way.
  4. Never despise another travelers story; they are a fellow pilgram on a similar journey and their story may save your life later on in the desert.
  5. Hang out at the local watering holes; these are places where other  thirsty creatives hang out; think coffee shops, book shops, open mic nights.
  6. Walk with others who are heading in the same direction; two or more can do things that one person simply cannot.
  7. Keep a record of all the strangers you meet and remember the stories that they tell you; one friend may lead to another.

The Desert Shouldn’t Be Such A Lonely Place

Are you walking through a desert… that was the question I asked you yesterday.

Is your desert a lonely place?

By it’s very nature a physical desert is desolate, dry and barren, it seldom rains, and nothing much lives there.

Many creative people feel isolated and alone in their artistic dreams and pursuits; many of us have families who live outside the realm of our dreams, understanding and comprehending little of why we MUST do what we do.

The strange fact is the desert is crammed full of lonely creative people, each on their own journey, each searching for their particular own oasis. Yet many of us are convinced that we must travel alone, that we must carry our own burdens, that no one will ever understand.

Instead be part of a new tribe of desert walkers, find comfort in the arms of other dreamers, the desert shouldn’t be such a lonely place.

The Truth About Nothing

Nothing is a place that many creatives visit often.

Nothing to write, nothing to draw, nothing to say, nothing in my bank account.

Nothing is a terrifying place  for those desperately eager to be somebody or to achieve anything. Nothing is the desert in which we search for the oasis of our dreams.

But nothing is also a wellspring where we truly discover the central essence of what it means to be nothing but ourselves. And being ourselves is essential if we wish to be truly unique and creative.

Are you walking through a desert right now?

The Advantage Of Getting Head Lice – READ

Let’s be honest, kids at school with head lice get treated a little different. This highly contagious itchiness is to be avoided at all costs and the poor little guy or girl is often put in some kind of social quarantine.

Being socially ostracized or left out can be extremely traumatic for children.

What is your point Geoff, you’ve only got seven sentences and “children with head lice” have nothing to do with “creative inspiration?”

My point is, the unusual and often painful conditions of our upbringing nearly always provide a fertile breeding ground for a person’s imagination. Painful experiences enrich our imaginations AND being socially ostracized CAN give you a unique perspective on life and the world around you.

How have the difficult situations in your life informed your creative process and given you a unique perspective?
