I should have titled this blog “why artists don’t have to watch television…” because that is probably the best way to save money on your cable.
The truth is we can get so wound up and so informed by what we see that our creative process and imagination can become atrophied and dry.
There is nothing worse than simply trying to re-create your own television show.
We are permeable and what we watch really sinks its teeth into out creativity and we can subconsciously bring together little pieces of everything we’ve seen into one new whole. This can happen to young actors a lot, they’re so infatuated by their favorite stars that they end up piecing together a living collage of every star on Hollywood Boulevard rather than having their own creative point of view about the situation their character finds themselves in.
You want to be unique right?
It might be time to turn off the television and imagine your own stories.
