Why Thinking Is So Dangerous For Creative People

Being full of ideas is a great and yet dangerous thing.

The best writers are the intuitive ones, the ones that do not think too much when they write. I always get myself into trouble when I am thinking.

When I am in the story that I am writing, my instincts take over and the characters pretty much write the story by themselves.

Why is thinking so dangerous for creative people?

Well storytelling is mostly about going on an emotional journey and unfortunately often our thinking is calculated, which results in us manipulating and controlling our characters to achieve our own desired result.

In my opinion, a writer must first empty themselves of their own ambitions and schemes and simply allow the creative process to take over.

Well, it depends on each person’s writing process, I guess…
I say a little bit of both is needed along the way (more coming later, I’m just too deep in my NaNoWriMo 2012 experience right now, 50,000 words in a month, just write, then edit from December on, which is great for letting the ideas flow uncensored!).

And, yes, sometimes I just take my characters and “act” them out (in a very theatrical way), to see them come alive and interact with each other and with the story.

The day people learn to write like they think and speak? Whammo! They have conquered the craft of writing!

I do need to qualify that. Some people are such bad story tellers and speakers they should shut up and let experts like me take over. Or go and learn to write.

Anyway. Thank MJ Gottlieb & Gary O’Neil for recommending this post. Those two guys put me onto the best writing on the web.
