Defining What Is Inspiration

Today’s Seven Sentences is bought to you by Eleni Poulakou. You can read her blog here.

Inspiration springs up when the necessity of expressing a reality joins the means that will render it in the most becoming manner. It is the truth overwhelming you, paining to impress its traits through the thick material of speech.

Inspiration is the way you perceive light dancing upon darkness, painting shades, tones and transient images. It is the vertigo of a descent and the redemptory rise with the trophies snatched from the depths.

Inspiration is the Spirit fluttering inside of you, when the mind and the heart move your fingers on the blank page. It is the messenger carrying on her wings the voices of humanity, transcending all dimensions and giving breath to what previously stood indifferent and motionless.

Inspiration is the collision with fear, awe at what is and longing for what you feel to see the light.

Inspiration is opening your eyes to the details of life pulsing all around you. It is interacting with the realities surrounding you.
True inspiration cannot turn towards evil and sickness – though, sometimes, the flute held in the hands of the Muse may be cracked or wry, out of tune.
Take care of the flute, for it is you and me. This is our first responsibility – to become efficient instruments in the hands of the goddesses. Then, we can invoke them and ask for their divine guidance, after we have paid our dues. For God helps those who help themselves.

Maybe God actually loves to help those who can’t help themselves?

This seventh sentence was initially meant to read something like: “Along with Athene, move your own hands too.” It’s an ancient Greek adage (“Syn Athena kae heira kinei”) which means that you should pray to the goddess and ask for divine intervention, but you should add your own efforts as well.
        Lost in translation, I guess…

Wow, well done. I especially like “the thick material of speech.” Somedays, when the words don’t come easily, it feels as if speech is made of concrete.

It happens a lot, Carolyn, and it doesn’t help banging our heads against that concrete wall.

That’s when I turn off my PC and go for a long, long walk. This helps move the energy — and oxygenate the brain, of course. Collect images too. While I walk, I keep my subject in the back of my head, but what helps me is that I change focus; then, some quite unexpected and wonderful ideas emerge.Of course, we love playing with this hard to tame material, don’t we?P.S.: Pretty useful site you’ve got!

Yes, Eleni, that’s so true. There comes great satisfaction from struggling through the words.

I love your walk idea. I need to try that. I tend to struggle through and I think a break with fresh air and a change of scenery would be much more effective.

Thank you for your kind words. I’m glad you like my site! :-)

I struggle too Carolyn… it is so difficult to find a balance and maintain that whole synergy that keeps me believing what I believing and working from a sense of grace and purpose.

A certain freshness usually comes with taking a break

          • http://www.wonderoftech.com Carolyn Nicander Mohr

Yes, freshness and a new perspective. :-)

I find that I get ideas in the middle of the night when I’ve stopped trying… Thanks so much for sharing and being part of Seven Sentences friend
