The Benefits of Laughter

Laughing is important because the soul comes alive when people laugh. Re-imagine some of the best times of your life… was laughter involved?

It is easy to get religious; creating out of some kind of fervor the desire to change the world with our writing. But maybe the world needs “laughter” just as much, if not more than it needs changing?

Could laughter actually be a holy irreverent thing; the kind of music that God ordained to be good for the soul?

When did you last fall on your knees and weep like a baby; not out of sorrow but out of joy? Who’s your favorite comedian and why do they make you laugh?

Holy irreverent or holy reverent? TOL (The Other Lisa)’s father is wholly irreverent but funny. Really, really funny. Really.

Chris Rock is my absolute favorite comedian.  His quick-witted, intelligent, well-informed brand of humor makes me laugh, and leaves me thinking about the truths behind his commentaries.

    • http://sevensentences.com Geoff Talbot

I love “The Rock” he’s hilarious

  • RG Ryan

Spot on, Geoff! My favorite comedian is Brian Regan. He makes me laugh because of the simplicity of his humor…finding amusing things about every day life; brilliantly (often satirically) commenting on them, while at the same time avoiding the easy out of “shock” humor. In short, he’s not a vulgarian.

In answer to your question, my favorite comedian, is Anita Renfroe. Clean comedy that actually makes me laugh because it comes from the everyday life of a MOM!  It doesn’t get better than that for me!

  • Debra Brown

Hi Geoff, nice to be here! Laughter is indeed necessary. My favorite…. without hesitation, is Bill Cosby. What a guy! It just rolls out of him. He gave a show in our town one day- though we did not hear of it. My son was walking somewhere and a gold car stopped at a stop sign. My son looked in, and there was “someone who looked just like Bill Cosby” waving at him. Then we learned that Bill was indeed in town. Wow!

Laughter is needed…that’s for sure.  It is a part of nearly every amazing experience there is…
As for my favorite comedian, there are just too many to name… and some great ones have already been named.
    Great post, Geoff.

  • Oliver

Woody Allen, Jim Gaffigan, Jeremy Hotz, Mike Birbiglia, Michael McIntyre, Sarah Millican, Milton Jones, so many good comedians. Why? They take everyday situations and have drawn out or twisted in the humour of it.

    • http://sevensentences.com Geoff Talbot

Yes I love Woody’s twisted, macabre fatalistic ways

Lewis Black is my favorite comedian. He takes everyday problems and real life situations and explains them as what they are. He’s not afraid to piss people off and he can make anybody laugh.

My favorite standup act is Demetri Martin. I love that his style is unique. It’s smart and stupid humor at the same time. (that makes sense right?) His flip chart routine is easily my favorite standup moment ever. I’ve watched it a hundred times and still wear diapers as a precaution.

Richard Lewis and Larry David are 2 of my faves.  Okay, I just watched Curb Your Enthusiasm so my opinion is a little jaded right now.  But they’re pretty, pretty, pretty good.

    Hi G,
I first read this post 2 days ago & was stumped while thinking of the answer to your question “who’s your favorite comedian & why do they make you laugh?” I don’t have a favorite comedian, but I have many precious laughter-filled moments with different people in my life while discussing situations that we find humorous. Like movie scenes that made us squeal with laughter & enthusiastic off-key renditions of our top songs during karaoke. The last time I laughed till tears came to my eyes was when I read tweets during hashtag games on twitter, esp stuff from @drews_clues:disqus

Other times- I laugh silently in my head, I guess.

    Thanks for asking,
    .faz

God certainly loves & knows the benefits of laughter as the saying that ” laughter is good medicine” proves as it comes from His word. My husband looks after people with a terminal illness in our local palliative care unit & one of the tools that he uses to help his patients is comedy dvd’s. This winter has been particularly hard on our family with a lot of flu & my daughter & I ended up with swine flu. One thing that has really helped is watching old family footage of when the children were toddlers. Lot’s of huge belly laughing going on & it really lifted our spirits. One of my favioute comedy acts is Rowan Atkins Mr Bean. We definately need more laughter & things to laugh with in this world as there is to many negative & horrible images being put out there.

Laughter is good for the soul and for the body as well. I am sure it’s on the list of things that keep people younger longer. I don’t have one favorite comedian; it’s more about what they say and if it resonates with me at the time.
