Make The World A Better Place & Dismantle Status

I want to dismantle status.

I learn from my students every day. I’m excited to see them charge forward to discover on their own. Even if – no, especially if,  it means disproving my preconceptions.

Leadership is a process of service, not command. It’s a product of vision and inspiration.

Look at the moon, not the finger pointing to it.

Dismantle Status was written by improv guru Jay Olson. Jay also has a great tumblr (click here) and is an amusing inspirational chap to follow on twitter. Click here if you are interested in writing a  Creative Guest Post for Seven Sentences.

Untitled

Creative Secrets - Seven Sentences

So we asked Blaine Hogan, the author of Untitled (a must have e-book for those wanting creative inspiration – click here for Amazon, Itunes and Barnes & Nobles ) the following 3 questions…

1. What role do “secrets” play in the creative process?

If art seeks to tell the truth in and about dark places (and I believe it does), we bring light into this darkness when we tell our secrets to one another.

2. How is truth is storytelling different to preaching or having an agenda?

When I’m preaching with an agenda, regardless if what I’m saying is true, I’m speaking at someone – but when I’m telling a true story, I’m speaking for someone; I’m speaking on their behalf (much more powerful, in my opinion).

3. In your excellent E-Book UNTITLED you describe “art as a confession;” explain?

If confession is about revealing both what we’ve done wrong and what we believe, then our art becomes a means of confession when we show up with both.

Bad Predictions

The world is not full of dreamers; instead it’s full of people making bad predictions (read) telling you not to dream.

Should you listen?

No… live your dream, chase it, run with it in all it’s fullness, chaos and raw beauty.

The world is really just a sports stadium full of fans and critics sitting in their seats with their hot-dogs, cheering and booing while the 20-30 athletes in the arena chase their dreams.

No one knows your future or the breadth and depth of your talent; not even you; enjoy discovering and finding out what you are capable of.

So many infamously bad “future predictions” have been made about any number of successful people. Your success, your dream, your future, does not rest in the hands of the fan sitting in the stadium; for they hold only their hot-dogs and not your dream.

The worst of bad predictions is in fact theirs; that they may continue to sit; remaining in the stands of life,  desperately in need of some exercise.

Encouragement Sentences

Inspiring People, well this is a billion dollar industry. You can go to seminars, conferences, or buy a CD series just to have inspiring people turn your lights on.

After-all the human soul was not designed to live without inspiration;  it’s food for soul. How do you find your inspiration?

Seminars are great, but would it not be far healthier for us to receive our inspiration from our friends who love us?

We need to create communities that “desire to inspire.” Communities who inspire you and inspire me to be full of inspiration; the creative delight of the human soul.

How To Stop “THINKING” When You Are Being Creative

Nothing will get in the way of your writing process like thinking.

The logical mind, is constructed in a such way that it desires to get things right and because of this you can spend a lot of time staring at the blank page thinking about what you are about to write.

This is unhelpful and unnecessary.

Heavy concepts, deep thinking and an “overarching need to be good” are strangling the life out of your pen. The logical mind has it’s controlling hands around your creativity’s throat and it is preventing the “ink” from flowing.

What to do, what to do, what to do?

SIMPLY START.

Free your creativity – grab a piece of paper and a pen, look at the clock and for the next “seven minutes” write every single thing that comes into your head.

Your Imagination is in your pocket

So I spent the best part of yesterday with eight kids under the age 12 and the following question was asked… where is your imagination?

If you are reading this blog, I now ask you the same question; physically, in the human body where does your imagination reside?

Is it solely in your brain, lying in the corridors of love tracking through your cerebrum?

What about your eyes, your ears, your taste buds, your sense of smell, the beauty of touch on your skin? Does your imagination live in these areas too?

The best answer I have ever heard came from my 11 year-old friend Michael who simply said… “your imagination lives in your pocket.”

It’s your imagination, it can live where-ever he or she chooses.
