Why Helping Homeless People Really Helps You

Helping homeless people shouldn’t just be a fad or a “cause” for celebrities, businesses or politicians; they are people caught in the down-swirl of life… I could be them and they could so easily be me.

Long time readers of this blog will be aware that I regularly write about the intimate connection between poverty and creativity. There are a number of side benefits for a creative soul who is brave enough to step out of their comfort zone and engage (builds relationships) with people on the other side of the street.

Please note… these are always side benefits, but they should never be “the actual reason” for “getting the grime and shit under your manicured fingernails.”

It is true that this entry point into another world will give you creative insight, expand your worldview and unlock your creativity, but you cannot “cross the road” for any of these benefits.

It is not our job to help or make a cause out of any person, from a posture of taking and receiving; although when we give with an open heart we will most definitely receive more than we could ever imagine.

… we give because we love and we love because we receive …

Be Misunderstood

Is Being Misunderstood a bad thing?

Does striving for normality lead you to an opus of ordinary? Is it a fatal mistake to try so hard to be understood and liked by everybody?

We can do this in the way we create a character, write a song or put our words on the page; trying to create through copying and assimilating is a dangerous and deathly thing. We have to go against the grain; forcing our way down a crowded sidewalk of people marching in the opposite direction.

It is not the crazy distinctly unorthodox people who really impact us and force change upon the world one person at a time. Life is found in mystery, truth is uncovered in the subtext of story; in the world of creativity it is infinitely more interesting to be misunderstood.

The Importance of Knowing

KNOWING and being KNOWN, is there a more important concept in our creative lives?

Boredom sets in, when we cease to desire “knowledge.” This can happen in our work, faiths, friendships, marriages and families. Why do we settle for a certain level of knowing, when there is always so much more to know. Stale bread is not good for the soul.

I like to think of life as a “deep never-ending well” of love and joy that I have fallen headlong into; plunging the depths, falling deeper into a never-ending eternal abyss of unceasing life.

There is so more to know and so much more to discover. Why do we stop knowing?

The Music Inside You

Music is inside everyone; I am learning this from my very talented and musical wife. But what if you’ve been told that you are not musical?

Music is more than rhythm, music is more than being able to tap in time or sing in tune. Music isn’t even that thing right at the bottom of your soul. Music is the cry of your heart , music is your SOUL itself.

I feel musical when I walk, when I write, when I act, when I’m with people; music happens when your soul comes alive.

Where is the “Music” in you?

Then Life Happens

Today’s guest post is written by Darren Sproat; an IT Manager and blogger from Regina who rocks inspiration and hope at Then Life Happens. You may connect with Darren on Twitter, @DarrenSproat.

Some of the most well thought out plans, goals and aspirations can be derailed by an unexpected event or circumstances beyond our control; it is called life and, in my experience, it is likely that all of us will come to a fork in the road at some time, make a decision to go one way and think at a later date that the other way may have been better.

Life has a tendency of testing us at every opportunity and being prepared for the unexpected circumstances of life is often easier said than done, especially if we ignore the opportunities to learn from our experiences along the way.

  • There’s more than one way from A to B – it doesn’t matter what you are aspiring towards, there’s more than one way to get there from here and, you just have to think about it.
  • Every person’s journey in life is different – just because something works for someone else doesn’t mean it’s going to work for you.
  • Focus on the 90 – focus on that part of your life you are grateful for and visualize and expect the best possible outcomes for that which you wish to achieve.

I am betting that you have a story of overcoming adversity to share and, perhaps, a few lessons you learned along the way that might be helpful for the rest of us.

Death… Why what your buddy says at your funeral doesn’t matter

Today’s Guest Post is written by  Sammy Abebiyi a college paster in Toledo. Check out Sammy’s Website here. You can also follow him on Twitter.

Because a friend of mine died in a plane crash, he got 3 minutes on the nightly news right before the weather… that’s 3 more ‘before-the-weather-report’ minutes than you and I will get when we kick the bucket.

When you die, people will; say nice things at your funeral, tweet ‘I miss you’s’ on your profile, send flowers to your loved ones and shed some tears BUT after a short while they ALL move on to the weather, the basketball game and watching ‘hide yo wife’ on you-tube.

The only ones that are stuck for a long time in the season of your death and can’t move on to normal everyday ‘poking their friends on face-book’ life are your spouse, kids, parents, closest friends and loved ones.

The irony is most of us spend much of our lives and time not only trying to impress those who will move on shortly after our death but we often disregard and take for granted those who will never be the same when we are gone.

What if you trade in living for the nice five minute speech your ‘buddy’ is gonna give at our funeral for living in a way that makes the time you have with your loved ones REALLY count?

Carpe Diem… [with those who will miss you the most when you die.]
