This great “Seven Sentence” story was sent in to by R.G. Ryan out of Las Vegas. RG is an amazing writer and you can check out more of his stuff at R.G.Ryan
He sits there day after day in an office cubicle looking for all the world like one of the characters from a Dilbert comic strip…the only difference is, their lives are funny, and Duane’s is anything but.
He typically wears nondescript clothing stretched tightly over a body that has seen way too many double cheeseburgers; his face unremarkable save for the uncommonly sad eyes that peer in stuporous boredom through comically thick glasses.
Sometimes during the long, often sleepless hours of the night he allows his mind to roam freely across the landscape of the life he dreams of living—a best-selling novelist writing stories of passion and power.
But then the morning comes and with it the cold reality that dreams…are just that.
I’ve met many people just like Duane who have snuffed out the last, flickering embers of their dreams believing with a desolate conviction that there is no use in clinging to that which can never be.
Desperation is a relentless gray stalker, following us down the days, intent on sapping the last vestiges of hope from our souls and thereby turning destinies into a sad caricature of what might have been.
One songwriter has said, “If wishes were horses then dreamers would ride,” and this brief blog post is a call for dreamers to saddle up, because nothing beats despair like a well-envisioned dream and the one who walks steadfastly, unwaveringly toward its realization.
Sometimes I feel chained creatively… by this I mean not free; do you relate?
I just know that there is more creativity, more freedom, more compassion, more life imprisoned deep inside of me; desiring to be let out, longing to be set free. What is it that imprisons me? What is it that imprisons you?
The battle we fight as creative people is not against flesh and blood. There is a type of evil that keeps our creativity in dark dungeons under lock and key, this is not a friendly foes.
These foes offer a place of comfort and a false peace; without risk or battle we will always remain in chains.
I am becoming morbidly averse to the frequency with which the word “conversation” is being used.
Yesterday somewhere in South Central, Los Angeles I am sure a young teenager was probably sent to the principles office for a “conversation” after bringing a firearm to school.
The trouble with “conversation” is that it is so overused, that the word is now broken and it needs to go away for a while before coming back. Conversation now means an overtly inane and self-important discussion where all parties pretend to have no agenda, it has now become a discussion without conflict or absolutes.
Conversation originally designed to enhance relationships is fast becoming a vehicle (method) for avoiding emotional conflict and is hence becoming detrimental. Are we pretending to listen and engage and then patting ourselves on the back for doing so?
Let’s get together for an argument instead.
It’s tempting to believe that we can make it on our OWN … we CAN’T because we weren’t DESIGNED too.
In the early stages of writing a script or a novel, creating a blog, or building a new start up, the intial creator(s) often do a lot of work… creating on their OWN.
We do this because we want to, but also because it appears necessary to get the BALL ROLLING; it takes a lot of courage to be an INCEPTOR, but it is FOOLISHNESS to remain alone and singularly focused thereafter.
I have become somewhat of an expert in this type of foolishness for much of the past five years, I have worked long hours in solitude; it’s TRUE that I have created much but it is also true that I have ACHIEVED LITTLE.
What are you creating right now… and what is your reason for doing it… what would you like to ACHIEVE?
Achievement in our creative endeavors ALWAYS centers around the involvement of other people; whether that be agencies, labels, publishers, web designers, band members or best of all… the AUDIENCE of FRIENDS that you create for…
DON”T BELIEVE A LIE…. You don’t need to be a success and have money you build a team… the INTERNET allows you to do it right now.
Imagine a thing… go on do it…
But what sort of “a thing… is it an object, an event, a relationship or an invention?
These creative questions just keep on rolling… and because we continue to ask them, the wheels of our imagination remain firmly stuck on the logical left side of our brain.
So often we come to the creative process with a subconscious agenda, some fixed notion of what it means to be creative, or some peculiar idea about having to get things RIGHT.
But everything we are about to do is imaginary,it is not right or wrong; “a moral imaginary world” doesn’t exist because it is all make believe… so RELAX and TRUST… the time for censorship is LATER.
Your life is like a blank canvas, an unwritten song, an empty blog or a white blank page; you can create WHATEVER with the space that you’ve been given.
The desire to get it right is…WAGING A WAR… against our CREATIVE FREEDOM.
