I spent last night in Monaco at a function for three Ethiopian Documentary Filmmakers… tough life huh? They have fascinating stories to tell. I was talking to my new friend Akal. I am betting that it is much tougher for Akal to make films in Ethiopia than it is for just about anyone in Cannes.
Akal has to hop on the back of the truck and travel 70 miles to his filming destination, he has to go alone because it would be too dangerous to take a sound-man or a Director. When the battery on Akal’s camera runs out he has to hop back on another truck and ride the 70 miles back into town to charge his battery.
The upside of the deal is this… Their country is so incredibly interesting to the western mind that just about any story they film will play.
