I had lunch with a very talented musician friend today who is in the process of having his very first music video made. He got a reasonable amount of funding for the video and contracted some filmmakers to make it for him.
The filmmakers went away and wrote an amazing treatment for the video and proudly bought it back to my friend and his band… they hated it. They went away again, worked solid for 3 or 4 days and then bought back their second masterpiece… they hated it even more. Exasperated the filmmakers finally asked the question… “well what do you want then?” And so of-course the band finally told them what they wanted.
When you making art for other people what you want is not really that important… and the first step in the creative process is to always sit down and listen.
