Important facts for filmmakers in LA.

Fact number 1: A film fund is not a film fund until they show you the money or until they actually fund a film. What they have is the “great idea” of a film fund.

Fact number 2: If someone meets a famous person in a bar this does not make them their close personal friend. Beware of name droppers.

Fact number 3: If you claim to have massive amounts of money and yet you can’t make it to a meeting on time (at all). How can we be sure that your money will make it to the table on time.

Into the Wild

I’ve lost count of the number of times people in LA have asked me if I have seen the movie “Into the Wild.” I think the question is primarily sparked by the extremely long beard I am currently sporting; that and my somewhat unique lifestyle.

Since I left the United Kingdom in the middle of March I have slept in 18 different places with lots of uncertainty as to “exactly” where I will be going next. To many people I know this lifestyle is challenging, it seems like an unplanned and dangerous way to live. It is… but it’s not forever.

I’m very much relying and following my intuition and being led by my faith and somehow I have ended up living the live of my character Rich in our film “Lucky & Rich.” It actually feels like I know where I am going. I just have to rely on my intuition to work out the way.

My Crazy Life – The Day I met Paris Hilton

I can’t say I ever watched it but today’s blog is the antithesis of Paris Hilton’s “The Simple Life.” That is possibly the best “worst” first line of any blog I have ever written, and it wasn’t even honest and now I have no idea where this writing is going…

Okay I must shamefully admit that a couple of years ago I couldn’t help but watch Paris’s reality show; mostly I watched it because I couldn’t believe that someone that pretty and that wealthy could be that stupid. Actually mostly I watched it because she was pretty which was kind of stupid of me.

Actually since I’ve been in LA I have been dying to meet Paris but she refuses to answer any of my calls and she seems somewhat scared of my video camera. However yesterday everything changed…

” Dear Mum… Hollywood is going great, I met a lovely girl yesterday who was the star in a big internet movie, her name is Paris, she says I am the nicest man she has ever met and I think she has met a few…”

Calling all People

The best business always happens through relationship. If a 21st century artist wants to own their career I think it is vital that they are involved in the business of their art. The idea of being involved in business scares a lot of creative people but it shouldn’t…

Because in actual fact business is becoming much more of an intuitive art and therefore it is much more accessible to the artist. Most business problems are in fact relational problems and who better understands relationships than the genuine artist?

We like to complicate things to make ourselves seem smart but many business problems would simply “vanish” if people choose to invest in the relationship rather than the business. Of course to build a good relationship takes vulnerability and courage… and some people would rather just try and do business.

Have no fear

Fear is my biggest enemy. I read a book once that was titled “Feel the Fear but do it anyway.” You don’t actually need to read the book, you just have to read the title.

I am thinking of this book because this week I have five or six terrific opportunities to progress our film Lucky & Rich, and of course I feel both excited and afraid. The only way of not being afraid of something is to do it.

I realized during the weekend that one of my my problems is that I take things too seriously; which is a strange thing for a comedian to say. When I forget to have fun and enjoy this incredible ride that’s when I begin to feel afraid.

Soaking up the city

I used to think I was very strong willed and incredibly well disciplined and I was very proud of myself for these qualities. But lately I have noticed that I am very much a reflection of my environment and I am so very easily influenced by whoever I spend my time with.

I am a sponge, I soak up whatever is going round; put me in a big city by myself and slowly my will power and discipline evaporates.

I heard an old saying that says “it takes a village to raise a child.” Of-course we grow up but I’m not sure that I’ve ever stopped needing that village. I think I’m realizing that I’m only as strong as the people standing next to me.
